NATURAL VS. SYNTHETIC
the general brush rule:
liquids, creams or gels… synthetic
powders and minerals… natural
in my head, natural brushes tend to look big, fluffy, texturised and porous (that is not the best way to describe natural hair, but hey, welcome to my ever-so-often unorthodox visual perception), whereas synthetic brushes have a more flat, straight-haired look to them. it is not surprising then, that you would expect natural brushes to be able to pick up more powder than its sleek looking competitor. a synthetic brush being dipped into powder almost looks as though only the outer layer strands get swiped, and any powder that does manage to sink itself into the centre of the brush, is not easily released onto the skin. touching on the next benefit of natural fibres, the ability to distribute powder much more evenly. on the flipside however, the same can be seen from synthetic brushes picking up liquids. because the liquids do not seep into the fibre, compared to porous natural hair, easy, quick, clean application onto the skin can be found in comparison to the latter.
my brush collection?
i am a great big fluffy animal lover, but i must confess, my love of cosmetics and beauty has tempted me to own a range of natural fibre brushes, which my boyfriend and best friend do not fail to tease me about since i purchased an entire professional brush set. as soon as they start calling my brushes ‘pet names’, i cover my ears, and sing as loudly as possible. in my lame defense, these brushes were purchased with ‘good’ intentions, for the purpose to apply powders and minerals effectively to clients and models in my portfolio. as for my own beautification, i think i may try to stick to synthetic fibres. plus, there are so many synthetic cosmetic tools out there nowadays that are being made to such a good quality, almost impersonating the characteristics of natural fibres. and although you can never truly imitate a natural hair fibre, we may get close enough that eventually i won’t even have an argument to write about.
DING DING. end of round 1.
