so. yesterday i had a lovely girly day with my friend the beauty therapist. i had a full facial, which included the following:
- cleansing
- toning
- exfoliating
- massage (which was so super relaxing!)
- facial paraffin wax
- moisturising
ok, so this is basically her usual routine for me, with the exception of the paraffin wax. i usually just go for a face mask at this point, then i could pretend to be the guy out of ‘the mask’, but she offered the paraffin wax so i thought what the hell, lets give it a go. so ‘paraffin wax?’ i’m thinking, ouch! i used to like playing with candle wax as a kid (didn’t we all?), but hot wax on my face? but she keeps telling me it will be fine. i lay down as she cleanses, tones, and nearly fall asleep while she gives me a face and upper body massage with oils. so the longer part of an hour passes, and its time for the paraffin wax. she rests cool cotton pads against my eyes and a gauze (a net of transparent fabric with a loose open weave) on my face. holes were cut for my nose and mouth enabling me to talk (which is necessary as i cannot sit for an hour without talking) and breathe (the next on my list of priorities lol). ok, so i can’t see anything, and she tests the wax against my arm, i’m attempting to speak through the gauze, expressing my concerns. ‘hot wax against my face??’ but again she reassures me, then begins to apply it. and i must admit, although it was an extremely weird sensation, the heat was very calming. it didn’t have a weird odour either, as i half expected it to smell chemical. it felt as though it was encouraging my facial muscles to relax. it applies similar to an oil, and hardens into wax against your face. she continues to apply thin layers of wax onto my skin, and gradually builds a thicker layer of wax (as you can see in the photo). when done, she leaves it to rest for approximately 10 minutes, then peels the mask off. immediately after this process, i feel for my skin, and it felt ultra soft, as it still does right now. after this, she wipes my face down with her sponges, lets my skin air dry and applies moisturiser.
- how does paraffin waxing work?
The heat of the wax enables your skin to sweat while the paraffin itself forms an airtight seal around your skin. this signals to your skin that it is suffocating and brings its own internal moisture to the covered area as a defense mechanism. this obviously creates an immediate soft result. for a quick boost of moisture and softness i would definitely suggest this treatment.

as with all processes similar to this, i believe you should never let your skin get dependent on ‘quick fixes’ such as this. in the long run, too many paraffin wax facials in a small period of time can dehydrate your skin due to the process of continuously fooling your skin into thinking you need a boost of moisture. i think its great to do it on ocassion and like any girl i love to get pampered, but i will always stick to my ‘old wives methods’ like applying aloe vera taken from the plant in the back garden nightly (thanks mum lol).
- the rest of the day
i had my eyebrows and eyelashes tinted… and i’m thinking they’re due for another perm next month. after all the fun beauty treatments, we moved back to my area of expertise and i done her up with a ‘pageant inspired’ look which will be posted up on the website soon.
as for today, i’m off to see the wizard the wonderful wizard of Oz.. or camden really, this time for myself and miss beauty therapy to take a trip to see our friend the hair stylist. wonder what’s new for my barnet?!
big love, xoxo missdollFace
